Blake advances in Indian Wells, Hewitt crushed by Lu James Blake advances to a second-round meeting with Andy Roddick by taking out Chris Guccione in three sets on Friday. Yen-Hsun Lu also moves on thanks to a straight-set rout of Lleyton Hewitt.

    (WC) James Blake d. (Q) Chris Guccione 3-6, 6-3, 6-2

Blake withstood 19 aces from Guccione to advanced after one hour and 35 minutes at the BNP Paribas Open on Friday evening. For a while, though, it appeared that Guccione's serve would be the difference. The 6'7'' Australian fired seven aces in the first set and saved both break points he faced, so one break of his own allowed him to serve it out at 5-3.

The rest of the way, however, it was all Blake. The 158th-ranked American began to dominate on serve, and he dropped a mere two points in five service games throughout the second frame of play. Guccione also started to flounder amidst increased pressure by his opponent and he especially struggled on second-serve points. Blake rolled to a pair of breaks in the third and finished off the proceedings with a routine hold at 5-2. Next up for the wild card entry is countryman Andy Roddick.

    Yen-Hsun Lu d. Lleyton Hewitt 6-2, 6-3

Lu capitalized on a dismal serving performance by Hewitt to pull off an emphatic upset in the Indian Wells first round on Friday night. Hewitt put in just 45 percent of his first serves, double-faulted five times without an aces, and won a shockingly poor four of 24 second-serve points. Lu also struggled on serve, but Chinese Taipei's top player earned a whopping five breaks to more than make up for his two donations of serve.

Hewitt did not hold a single time in the entire first set, but he at least managed to be competitive in the second. Still, the veteran Aussie dropped serve on more time and could not convert any of his two break chances in an attempt to get back in the match. Lu, who had been 1-7 for the year prior to Friday, will face Ernests Gulbis for a spot in the third round.
