Janko Tipsarevic def. Tobias Kamke 6-2, 6-0
Serbia’s Janko Tipsarevic got off to an explosive start in California with a complete dismantling of Germany’s Tobias Kamke. The match lasted under an hour; Tipsarevic broke Kamke’s serve 5 times, while dropping just 6 points on his own serve. The win sends the Serb into the second round where he will face American Sam Querrey.
Donald Young def. Potito Starace 2-6, 6-3, 6-3
American qualifier Donald Young won his second tour-level match of the year against Potito Starace on Thursday. The American had some difficulty on serve, with a scant 47% first serve percentage for the match. As a result, he faced down an even dozen break points, 6 of which came in the second set. Young managed to stave off all 6, and managed to secure a pair of service breaks to level the match after he dropped the first set.
By the third set, Starace’s serve let him down. The Italian was broken 3 times, and while he managed to secure a service break from Young, it was far from enough to save the match. Young will have the tall task of Andy Murray in the second round.
