Andy Roddick finishes off the first-round Davis Cup matchup between the United States and Chile with a four-set win over Paul Capdeville on Sunday in Santiago. The Americans will host Spain in July's quarterfinals.
The United States Davis Cup team has always affectionately called Andy Roddick "The Closer," and close is exactly what Roddick did on Sunday.
With a 2-1 lead in first-round action at Chile, Roddick sealed the deal and sent the Americans through to the Davis Cup quarterfinals with a 3-6, 7-6(2), 6-3, 6-3 victory over Paul Capdeville. Roddick needed three hours and six minutes to earn his second singles win of the tie and prevent a decisive fifth rubber that would have featured John Isner against Nicolas Massu.
Capdeville, who defeated John Isner in five sets on Friday to even the tie at 1-1, kept up his momentum early in Sunday's match despite going down a break in the first set. He fell behind 3-2 but broke back immediately for 3-3 and ended the opening frame of play on a four-game winning streak. Capdeville instilled even more hope into an already-boisterous Chilean crowd with a clutch hold for the set at 5-3.
The world No. 165 maintained his fine form in the second even though Roddick was almost unstoppable on serve. Capdeville won a mere four return points in set two, but he saved both of the break points he faced and managed to force a tiebreaker. In the 'breaker, though, Roddick raced to a commanding 4-0 advantage and cruised through it seven points to two.
Having already played seven intense sets in less than 48 hours, Capdeville started to fade in the third. Roddick began to gain the upper hand even in baseline rallies and he earned two breaks, the second of which came at 5-3 to finish off the set in style. He added a quick break in the fourth, and he fought off two break points at 4-2 before a routine hold at 5-3 clinched victory for the United States.
Roddick, who also beat Nicolas Massu in four sets on Friday, finished with 55 winners and 47 unforced errors while Capdeville wrapped up his effort with 47 winners and 60 mistakes. The world No. 8 also fired 17 aces against just one double-fault.
