  • Nadal sticks around for dead rubber in 4-1 Spanish victory

    3/6/11 9:02 PM | Cheryl Murray
Nadal sticks around for dead rubber in 4-1 Spanish victory Rafael Nadal decided to give the Belgians a show on Sunday; the world No. 1 elected to play a dead rubber against Olivier Rochus.

Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco already secured the Spanish win over Belgium on Saturday. The doubles team defeated Steve Darcis and Olivier Rochus to give Spain a 3-0 lead that would send them into the quarterfinals.

World No. 1 Rafael Nadal decided to hang around an extra day in Belgium instead of flying to the Californian desert to prepare for the upcoming Indian Wells Masters event. Nadal defeated Olivier Rochus 6-4, 6-2 in Sunday’s dead rubber.

Fernando Verdasco pulled double duty for the Spanish squad, with a showing in the first singles rubber against Xavier Malisse and again in the doubles with partner Feliciano Lopez.

Spain will meet the Americans in the quarterfinals.

Before playing in Indian Wells, Rafa will play in Oregon. He will play an exhibition match (one set) at the Nike promotional event "Clash of the Champions" in Oregon next Tuesday (on March 8).
He is on his way to USA.

Good on Rafa for doing his bit for the spectators by electing to play O. Rochus who wanted so badly to play against Nadal in front of his home crowd. Rafa needed the match play, and Olivier was a great hitting partner. But seriously, Olivier played well, but Rafa was far too good.

I feel pretty certain that Rafa stayed for the fans. It was really quite decent of him.

Yes, everyday Rafa is proving that he is no fake, he really is a decent guy. What you see is what you get.
