Jeremy Chardy put France into the quarterfinal after rallying to oust Martin Fischer in four sets. The Frenchman, already a winner over Jurgen Melzer on Friday, tallied 45 winners and four breaks of serve through two hours and 39 minutes of play.

"I was very nervous," Chardy said, after committing 18 unforced errors in the opening set, "but Guy [Forget] just told me to take my time and breathe, and I started to play better."

Austria had leveled the tie at 2-2 by virtue of Jurgen Melzer’s 7-6(7), 3-6, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory against Gilles Simon early Sunday.

The crowd kept me going," Melzer explained, "they were always behind me. They pushed me through. This is important, this is Davis Cup, this is what it’s all about. I stayed tough, I dug deep.”

France is slated to take on quarterfinal-round opponent Germany in July. Germany advanced to the final eight with a 3-2 besting of Croatia.
