  • Spain takes a 2-0 lead over Belgium

    3/5/11 4:07 AM | Cheryl Murray
Spain takes a 2-0 lead over Belgium Fernando Verdasco and Rafael Nadal propelled Spain to a 2-0 lead over the Belgians at home. A win in the doubles on Saturday would mean dead rubbers on Sunday and an early flight to Indian Wells for the world No. 1.

The Spain-Belgium Davis Cup tie marked Rafael Nadal’s first match since a thigh injury saw him out of the Australian Open in the quarterfinals. Spain’s top player was understandably rusty after the 6-week layoff, but his serve worked well on the quick service and he defeated Ruben Bemelmans 6-2, 6-4, 6-2.

Depsite Nadal not being at his best, he faced only 1 break point, which he successfully fought off, and hit 42 winners to just 20 unforced errors.

Nadal’s teammate Fernando Verdasco was equally as impressive against top Belgian Xavier Malisse. Verdasco dropped 8 games, the same as his countryman and gave Spain the lead with a 6-4, 6-3, 6-1 scoreline.

Malisse managed to secure a single break of serve, but he was broken himself 6 times and really never got a foothold in the match.

Spain will pit Verdasco and Feliciano Lopez against Malisse and Olivier Rochus in Saturday’s doubles rubber. A win for Spain would make it 3 and out for the Belgians.
