Joachim Johansson and Robin Soderling have given Sweden an impressive lead over Russia in front of the home crowd.
Top Swede Robin Soderling started off proceedings for Sweden with a 6-3, 6-3, 6-1 trouncing of Igor Andreev. The world No. 4 was completely dominant. He fought each of the 5 break points against him and secured 5 of 7 from Andreev.
Andreev helped matters for the Swedes by playing a sloppy match. The Russian hit a staggering 65 unforced errors in 3 short sets and just 26 winners. Soderling didn’t play particularly cleanly either, but he didn’t really need to.
The big excitement of the day for Swedish fans was the success of Joachim Johansson over Teimuraz Gabashvili. The towering Swede has struggled for years with a debilitating shoulder injury, but he seems to front up in front of his countryman.
Johansson served magnificently in the match. The Swede sent 33 aces past Gabashvili and faced just 1 break point, which he saved.
Sweden will count on their doubles team of Simon Aspelin and Robert Lindstedt to seal the round 1 victory.
