  • Argentina clinches tie against Romania

    3/5/11 9:42 PM | Kelli DeMario
Argentina clinches tie against Romania Three-time Davis Cup finalist Argentina has advanced to the quarterfinal, after doubles pair Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank downed Romanians Victor Hanescu and Horia Tecau.

Argentina entered into Saturday’s doubles match with a 2-0 advantage, after David Nalbandian and Juan Monaco earned key singles victories over respective opponents Adrian Ungur and Victor Hanescu.

Doubles teammates Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank put the tie out of reach, having ousted the Romanian pairing of Victor Hanescu and Horia Tecau, 6-2, 7-6(8), 6-1.

“First of all, I’m really happy for us, because we could give Argentina the victory, and I’m also happy to be part of the team,” Chela explained, post-victory. “I felt very good on court. Eduardo is a very good player, who has a strong serve. And I think I played very good tennis.”

Argentine captain Tito Vazquez said, “We expected to win, we knew we had chances to win the five matches, but also we could lose them all, too. So, to be 3-0 on the second day is just perfect. We cannot wish any better than that.”

Argentina will face either Kazakhstan or the Czech Republic in the quarterfinal at home in July.
