Gilles Simon earned a critical point for France, following his straight-set singles rubber victory over Stefan Koubek. Compatriot Jeremy Chardy initially put France ahead, as he delivered a surprise defeat to World No. 10 Jurgen Melzer.

World No. 55 Jeremy Chardy won his first match of the year, after upending World No. 10 Jurgen Melzer in straight sets. The 24-year-old Frenchman had entered into the first singles rubber at 0-4, having suffered opening-round losses through four tournaments. Chardy, who dug his way out of a break deficit in the third set, completed the two-hour and 23-minute match with 14 aces and 31 winners.
“It’s amazing for me,” Chardy said, post-match. “Since the beginning of the year I hadn’t won a match and today I played unbelievable. I’m very happy for me and for the team.”

Former World No. 6 Gilles Simon had little difficulty taking the second point for France, as he downed veteran Stefan Koubek in straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, 6-3. The 26-year-old finished the effort without facing a break point through an hour and 38 minutes of play. Simon, who recorded his third singles victory, ended the match with 41 winners and six of 12 break points converted.
