Mark Philippoussis will follow the money to Zurich after turning down an improbable wild card into qualifying for next week's Indian Wells Masters 1000.
The 34-year-old Australian accepted and then declined the invitation fromIndian Wells organisers after being offered a late place in the seniors when Stefan Edberg withdrew injured. With his financial problems and a real estate foreclosure not so many months ago at home in Melbourne, the lure of
a guarantee at the Swiss event proved to be too good to pass up when compared with the uncertainties of testing himself in unpaid qualifying rounds in the California desert.
Philippoussis may have also felt that his luck among the seniors was turning after lifting his first title at that level last week in Delray Beach, Florida.
Edberg, who beat Goran Ivanisevic in the final last year, gave himself as long as possible to be fit, but was forced to admit defeat. "I am very sorry that I can't play in the BNP Paribas Zurich Open next week," said the Swede.
"I love playing there and I had a fantastic week last year. It was a very difficult decision to take but health must come before tennis so that I can continue playing in the future. I am not in good enough shape to play four matches at the moment and I really want to be 100 percent prepared so that I can do my best. I will be in rehab for a while and then hopefully back again 100% to play next year."
The all-star field also includes Pete Sampras, John McEnroe, Ivanisevic,Tim Henman, Thomas Muster, Michael Stich and Henri Leconte.
