Marin Cilic and Florian Mayer will be going head-to-head for the second time this season when they kick off the Serbia-Germany tie on Friday. Ivan Dodig and Florian Mayer are set to contest the second rubber.
Florian Mayer vs. Marin Cilic
Mayer is becoming somewhat of a nemesis for Cilic, and the Croat hopes that changes when he enjoys the friendly confines of a home court with his country hosting Germany in first-round Davis Cup action this weekend. However, Cilic already played Mayer once this season in Zagreb and he lost that quarterfinal clash 6-3, 6-4. Mayer also got the best of a 2010 opening-round Wimbledon encounter with a 6-2, 6-4, 7-6(1) victory.
The German continues to play stellar tennis, as he is up to No. 36 in the world thanks to an 11-6 mark for his 2011 campaign. He has already been to a pair of ATP semifinals in addition to two quarterfinal appearances. Cilic, though, has won 10 of his last 14 matches to end a slump that culminated in a first-round loss in Chennai. The world No. 20 has a chance for redemption on Friday, and with a rowdy crowd behind him he should be able to pull it off in five sets.
Philipp Kohlschreiber vs. Ivan Dodig
The streak of home-grown winners in Zagreb continued even though Cilic, the two-time defending champion, fell. That's because Dodig bulldozed his way to a surprising title, taking out a different German--Michael Berrer--in the final. Dodig is an amazing 10-4 for the season and he currently registers at a career-high ranking of No. 57 in the world.
Friday will mark the first career meeting between Dodig and Kohlschreiber, who comes in at 35th in the rankings. The German has been consistently mediocre this year, losing in the second round in four of his five tournaments and advancing to the quarterfinals in Auckland. Dodig has the edge in current form, but Kohlschreiber has enjoyed a flair for dramatic matches over the years. Look for the visitor to level the tie at 1-1 after five entertaining sets.

Kohl was not playing badly recently. I remember he gave Sod a run for his money at Rotterdam this year. He may be able to beat both Cilic and Dodig. I do hope Cilic gets pass Mayer this time, time for Cilic to step up and plays like a top twenty guy. Hopefully Croatia can beat Germany 3-2 on home ground.
