The opening singles rubber of the Davis Cup tie between the United States and Chile will feature Andy Roddick and Nicolas Massu. John Isner and Paul Capdeville are set to follow.
Andy Roddick vs. Nicolas Massu
Roddick and Massu will be squaring off for the fifth time in their careers and first time since 2006 when the two veterans kick off the first-round Davis Cup tie between the United States and Chile on Friday. Massu leads the head-to-head series 3-1, including 2-0 on clay. Their most recent encounter, though, ended in Roddick retirement when he trailed 4-2 in the opening set. They have face each other once in Davis Cup, on grass in the 2006 World Group quarterfinals, and Roddick prevailed 6-3, 7-6(5), 7-6(5).
Even on clay and at home in Chile, Massu would do well to make this one similarly competitive. The 31-year-old plays sparingly now, in part because he cannot enter many tournaments at No. 241 in the world. Roddick, on the other hand, is 12-2 for his 2011 campaign and he is coming off a title at the 500-point event in Memphis. It's clear that Massu's career is drawing to a close; the question is does he have one or two more heroic efforts left in him? The answer is likely no.
John Isner vs. Paul Capdeville
Isner and Capdeville are set for the third career meeting (all on clay), and if the first two are any indication, this one could go the distance. In the first round of the 2008 Bermuda Challenger, Isner pulled out a 6-2, 6-7(3), 6-4 victory. One year later in their sole ATP-level clash, the 6'9'' American advanced 4-6, 7-6(1), 7-6(5) in the Houston second round.
Playing at home and again on the slow stuff will give Capdeville a chance despite the ranking differences (he registers at No. 165, Isner is 34th). The Chilean is 0-2 on the ATP circuit this season, but his opponent is finding it hard to duplicate the success he enjoyed in 2009 and 2010. Isner comes in with a meager 3-4 record and he lost in the first round of both Memphis and Delray Beach. Look for Capdeville to score the upset in five sets and even the tie at 1-1.

not a rule, but i was wondering the same thing
maybe Chile was wishfully thinking for a pair of 5-hour, 5-set thrillers
and yes, USA has a very good chance this year. If they win this, they will play Spain, but at HOME, and Nadal will not play the week after Wimbledon most likely.

Team USA will win Davis Cup this year!
Andy is back and he doesn't lose unless it's clay and a great player. Only John McEnroe was a greater Davis Cup hero for the US. The Bryans won't lose to anybody. If Sam, John or Mardy can give one match win easy wins for all rounds.
Questions to anybody : Why did Andy play his match so early in the morning in Chile? Is there some rule that all ties have to played at the same time?
