  • Roddick, Isner lead U.S.A to Chile

Roddick, Isner lead U.S.A to Chile The United States did not get out of the Davis Cup opening round last year, but the team played its way back into the World Group. Up first for the Americans in 2011 is a road date with Chile.

The United States will be venturing to South America for a second consecutive Davis Cup tie when it visits Chile in first-round action this weekend.

In the last year's opener, the Americans had to go on the road to face eventual champion Serbia and they fell 3-1. Relegated to the playoff bracket, they headed to Colombia in the fall and battled their way back into the World Group for 2011.

Now Team USA is set for a return trip to South America for a date with Chile, which is missing top player Fernando Gonzalez due to injury. The Chileans are thus going with Nicolas Massu, Paul Capdeville, Jorge Aguilar, and Guillermo Rivera-Aranguiz. Massu, the veteran of the team, is slated for both singles and doubles duty while Rivera-Aranguiz is not expected to see the court.

Andy Roddick skipped Davis Cup in 2010, but he is back on board this year for the USA. Roddick, who won the Memphis title last month, teams up with John Isner to form an impressive singles lineup. As if that isn't enough, the Americans boast arguably the best doubles team in Davis Cup history in twin brothers Bob and Mike Bryan.

What makes this tie intriguing is that not only is it in Chile, but it is also--of course--on clay. This would be a no-contest in the United States, yet both the surface and the setting will give the Chileans a chance. The home team is not going to get the doubles point, so it will be up to Massu to win both of his singles rubbers and Capdeville to somehow pull out one of his matches.
