Veteran David Nalbandian and host nation Argentina look to capture their maiden Davis Cup championship as they take on Romania this weekend. The home team has reached the finals in 1981, 2006 and 2008.
Argentina is slated to meet Romania for the second time in Davis Cup competition. The two nations first clashed in 1981 when a quarterfinal-round victory went to Argentina at 3-2. The home country is three-times a runner-up, last finishing in second place to Spain in 2008.
Team captain Modesto “Tito” Vazquez has chosen Davis Cup standout David Nalbandian to lead the squad in singles competition. The 29-year-old enters into the tie ranked World No. 19, having successfully mounted a comeback after undergoing hip surgery in 2009.
Joining the veteran Argentine, who will commence his 20th Davis Cup effort this weekend, are compatriots Juan Monaco, Juan Ignacio Chela and Eduardo Schwank. The tie is scheduled to be played on clay (outdoor).
Argentina will be looking to regroup after a disappointing semifinal finish to France in 2010. The host nation traveled to Lyon, where they fell 0-5.
Visiting Romania is led by former ATP World Tour player Andrei Pavel. He has selected Victor Hanescu, Adrian Ungur, Victor Crivoi and Horia Tecau. Hanescu, ranked World No. 59, is currently tapped to take part in both singles and doubles.
Like Argentina, Romania is a three-time Davis Cup finalist. They were relegated in 2009, but recovered their World Group status after blanking Ecuador 5-0 during World Group play-offs in September 2010.
