There's more bad news for the debut of new US Davis Cup captain Jim Courier, with big man Sam Querrey now out of the weekend first-round mix against Chile in South America.
Courier, already in Chile with his men, said Querrey is suffering with a sore shoulder and did not make the flight from Miami.
The season so far for the No. 24 has been highly forgettable, with Querrey not passing a second round in 2011 and losing his first three matches of the season. Courier said that Querrey will instead concentrate on gaining fitness for next week's Indian Wells Masters 1000.
"Sam has been having trouble with his right shoulder and he got an MRI on Friday that revealed a slight impingement in his rotator cuff," Courier said. "Doctors have advised him to rest. We thought it was best that he not make the trip to Santiago and get ready for Indian Wells and Miami."
The American effort is bolstered by the return of Andy Roddick who took last year off from play in the worldwide team competition. The No. 8 will be backed in singles by Wimbledon marathon man John Isner, who ranking has sunk to 32nd. The US can likely count on a doubles point against a side missing sparkplug Fernando Gonzalez, with the world No. 1 pair of Californians Bob and Mike Bryan on hand.
