There will be a vital Canadian component missing in this weekend's Davis Cup American zonal tie as long-serving stalwart Daniel Nestor sits out a tie for the first time in a decade.
The doubles great, aged 38, is due to miss the weekend title with Mexico in the capital due to an inflamed Achilles tendon.
Doctors told the two-time Wimbledon doubles champion that rest was the prescription for his problem. The veteran is expected to be fit late next week when play begins at the first Masters 1000 of the season at Indian Wells.
But Canada is fortunate to boast one of the hottest young racquets in the current game with Milos Raonic on court along with teammates Frank Dancevic and Peter Polansky, who hope to get the job done against the Mexicans whose best player is ranked 39.
Nestor holds the record for most years played by a Canadian in Davis Cup at 18, the most wins (42), the most doubles wins (27) and most ties played (38). Despite his injury, Nestor, the world's third best doubles player behind the American Bryan brothers, does not expect to miss any ATP spring hardcourt play.
