  • Nishikori, Raonic and others granted Wildcards into BNP Paribas Open

    3/2/11 6:47 AM | James Munoz
Nishikori, Raonic and others granted Wildcards into BNP Paribas Open Rising stars Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori, Ryan Harrison, Bernard Tomic and others granted wildcards into the 2011 BNP Paribas Open main draw.

The BNP Paribas Open held March 7-20 at the Indian Wells Tennis Gardens will once again be loaded with the top players in the sport. In addition to the players granted direct entrance to the event, a select number of wildcard entrants were given main draw spots. Among the wildcard entrants are Milos Raonic, Kei Nishikori, Ryan Harrison, Bernard Tomic and James Blake.

Rising Canadian star Milos Raonic, fresh off his 2010 San Jose title and Memphis finalist appearance brings his world number 37 ranking to his first duel in the desert. This 6’5” Montenegran born giant’s big serving and high risk game are sure to attract plenty of followers as he hopes to continue his winning ways in California. One can only hope he is drawn with Fernando Verdasco for a third encounter this year.

Japan’s Kei Nishikori brings in an 8-4 record on the year, highlighted by wins over Marin Cilic, Florian Mayer and fellow wildcard James Blake. Kei trains in Florida and is seeking his first main draw win in three attempts at Indian Wells.

Ryan Harrison and Bernard Tomic are the two youngest players in the top 200 and bring fearlessness to the courts that will try to shake up the draw. The American Harrison had success at the 2010 US Open by advancing through qualifications and taking out the 2010 BNP Paribas Open champion, Ivan Ljubicic. Australian Bernard Tomic made a run at the Australian Open taking out top 50 players Jeremy Chardy and Feliciano Lopez in straight sets before succumbing to Rafael Nadal.

2006 Finalist and American hopeful James Blake is recovering from injuries and looking to leave his mark in what is likely to be one of his final visits to Indian Wells.

Tickets are still available for the BNP Paribas Open and can be purchased by logging onto www.bnpparibasopen.com, calling the Indian Wells box office, 800-999-1585 or 760-200-8000, or visiting the box office, 78-200 Miles Avenue, Indian Wells, CA, 92210.

only 2 Americans, 1 of whom is James Blake

just makes no sense

I guess giving wildcards to Raonic ,Tomic etc is a better commercial decision than giving it to some uninspiring player merely because he is american?

vij , 3/3/11 12:49 AM

Ouch! American tennis does suck these days though. Go Milos!

Raonic vs Verdasco again? I think if they meet for a third time, Verdasco will win this time. In fact Verdasco had chances to win both times, it's not that he was beaten badly, so if ever they'll meet again, Verdasco will be extra careful, for his reputation's sake.

Masters is a different kettle of fish compared to 250 or 500 events, that's why so far not many players other than the top four/five guys had won the Masters tournaments. In recent times(2005-2010),only Davy, Tsonga, Nalby, Berdych, Robredo, Ljuby and Roddick had won the Masters titles besides the top five guys. The top five guys had won 43 out of 54 Masters titles!

zare, don't get so upset. Cheryl is going to do something about that Fed back in Dubai thread. She mentioned that she was down with illness so didn't do the moderation for that thread until now.

luckystar , 3/4/11 3:03 AM

Zare, I like you mate, but reposting that garbage over and over for all to see in every thread on the site turns you into part of the problem -- not the solution. I said on the other thread and will say here - a simple e-mail to info@tennistalk.com is MUCH more effective.

agree with you lucky. but if some of these young guys can make some noise. it would spice things up a bit more. let's hope we get some great matches at IW.

OK... I will use this post to apologize to all good ppl here for spaming :(
Cheryl...sorry but that was 4,5 days on and on, so I just wanted to attract the attention, and I was... well... lets say very angry so my language wasn't something that I am proud of.
Won't happens again.

Let's back to tennis...
I agree that new names are adding spice to tournament. Raonic really looks like on fire guy... Tomic, by my two cents has started too early to act like he is Roger Federer or Rafa... but, that kid can really play...
But problem is... it's not enough to produce from time to time... you have to keep lvl for very long time to be in company of the best! Are they capable of that, time will show!

homos - sorry i didnt continue our discussion about simon, that thread was so full of ridiculous posts that i'm really not going back there.

pretty excited about indian wells next week! plenty of opportunities for new people to make their mark.

mriiidula , 3/4/11 2:15 PM

mriiidula: no problem...totally understand. was a bit suffocating. poor cheryl, she was sick and then returned to deal wtih that.

agreed. hope the young guys can keep a decent level and not fade away this season. they are providing good entertainment and competition which can only be good for the game.

The draws are getting later and later. With I/W starting tomorrow, we still have no clue as to who is likely to play who, what could be the reason for that.

nadline , 3/6/11 10:57 AM

I thought qualifying doesn't start until Thursday.

Milos won 3 rubbers for Canada on the Mexican clay. Impressive again.
