Roger Federer has had to put any other sporting life on hold until after retirement, with his tennis fitness taking precedence over any other activity.
The winner of 16 majors has had past scares with injury while playing with something besides a racquet. And given his status in the game, taking a risk is just not worth it.
Skiing, which every Swiss child surely learns, is just one example of a sporting love in which the world No. 2 can no longer indulge safely. “Last time I skied was in 2008 when I had mono,” said the top seed in Dubai.” I came back after the Australian Open, went skiing, and next day I got ill again. So I was like: ‘Okay, it's a sign for me. No more skiing’. That's a pity."
There is also football; he used to train with hometown FC Basel. "To be quite honest, I do miss it,” said Federer of his other sporting passions.
“Soccer? I haven't played much either. I remember when I had the groin issue in Wimbledon a few years ago. Then I went to Gstaad and I really couldn't move well. I won the doubles with Marat Safin but I went to play soccer that whole week as well and couldn't move at the end. It was just so silly of me. I did the same with squash as well.”
"I just don't want to do it because my body is accustomed to playing tennis right now. I actually do miss doing all those things a bit more often. But honestly, I can wait. It's a pity, but, look, I'll be able to enjoy them much more when I'm done.”
Federer will confess to the odd round of golf and added with a smile: "I can play ping-pong and I can play cards if that's a sport."
