  • Dolgopolov saves set points, sends Wawrinka packing in straights

Dolgopolov saves set points, sends Wawrinka packing in straights Alexandr Dolgopolov saw off Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka in straight sets after the No. 4 seed earned himself four set points in the second set.

The Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov continues to prove that he’s the real deal. The youngster added yet another upset to his tally that also includes world No. 4 Robin Soderling, with a straight set win over Stanislas Wawrinka.

Dolgopolov served well in the first set. He smacked 7 aces, no mean feat on clay, and served at 59%. Wawrinka earned himself a pair of break points, but he was unable to convert. Dolgopolov went 1 for 6 on break point chances, but it was enough to take the lead.

Wawrinka got off to a great start in the second set. The Swiss man broke Dolgopolov in his first service game, and had a break point to go up 4-0. It was not to be. The Ukrainian held his nerve to come from behind and force a tiebreaker, staving off a break point that would have meant the set when he was serving at 5-6.

The Swiss man drew blood first in the breaker, only to lose it again. Dolgopolov was down 4-6, with 2 more set points for Wawrinka, but found his way out of trouble yet again. With Wawrinka serving at 6-6, Dolgopolov made his move and secured the break of serve. A gutsy serve-volley on match point sealed the upset for the Ukrainian.
