Stanislas Wawrinka had to work hard to get past second round opponent Fabio Fognini. Alexandr Dolgopolov had a much easier path to the quarterfinals.
Alexandr Dolgopolov def. Carlos Berlocq
Australian Open quarterfinalist Alexandr Dolgopolov continued to impress on Wednesday with a quick straight sets defeat of Argentina’s Carlos Barlocq. The match last just 1 hour and 12 minutes, during which, Dolgopolov broke the Argentine 4 times in 6 tries.
The Ukrainian youngster did not face a single break point on his own serve. Dolgopolov has already proven his prowess on the dirt with an appearance in the final of Costa Do Sauipe, where he lost to Nicolas Almagro.
Dolgopolov will take on Stanislas Wawrinka in the quarters.
Stanislas Wawrinka def. Fabio Fognini
Unlike Dolgopolov, Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka was pushed hard in his second round match. Fabio Fognini kept Wawrinka on court for 2 hours and 50 minutes taking the first set and pushing the third to 7-5.
As in his previous match in Acapulco, Wawrinka had trouble with his serve, though he was fortunate that Fognini had even more problems. There were a total of 12 service breaks in the three sets, 5 of which were surrendered by Wawrinka.
The Swiss man was better in the third set, where he didn’t face a single break point, but he still only managed to snag the match-winning break of serve as Fognini served to send the decider to a tiebreaker.
