Roger Federer continues his straight-set trek thugh the Dubai draw with a win over Sergiy Stakhovsky on Thursday. Federer awaits either Gilles Simon or Richard Gasquet.
Like Novak Djokovic just a few hours earlier, Roger Federer dropped serve in the opening game of the match before recovering for a straight-set win.
Federer beat Sergiy Stakhovsky 6-3, 6-4 in one hour 12 minutes to reach the semifinals of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Thursday evening. The world No. 2 will face either Gilles Simon or Richard Gasquet for a place in the title match.
After his forehand went haywire in game one, Federer bounced right back and broke for 1-1 thanks to a scorching backhand return. His early struggles continued, but he dug out of a 0-40 hole in the third game and that's when he started to get going. Federer added a second break for a 5-3 lead before serving out the first set without too much trouble.
Stakhovsky really lost his way when poor serving and errant forehands caused him to get broken at 1-1 in the second. The 43rd-ranked Ukrainian stayed in it mentally and created some chances, but he never could get back on serve. Federer a break point at 3-2 and fought off two more at 4-3 to maintain his advantage. The four-time Dubai champion finally had an easier time of things with the match on his racket at 5-4, and he clinched victory when a Stakhovsky forehand landed just wide.
Federer finished with six aces and two double-faults while fighting off eight of nine break-point opportunities. Stakhovsky wrapped up his effort with three aces and one double-fault.
