Fernando Verdasco saw his 2011 clay season debut cut short at the hands of Thomaz Bellucci of Brazil.
Spain’s Fernando Verdasco may still be a top 10 player (he is ranked No. 9 in the world), but that hasn’t stopped him from losing in the first round in 2 successive tournaments.
The bloodletting actually began in San Jose, where he lost in the final to Milos Raonic. He next moved onto Memphis, where he met Raonic again – this time in the first round – and promptly lost to the Canadian again. He now adds this loss to Bellucci to his streak.
As expected, the Spaniard came out rusty in the opening set. It was his first match on clay for the season against a fine clay court player – and it showed. Bellucci scored a pair of service breaks without even looking at a break point on his own serve.
Seemingly with the match rust behind him, Verdasco played much better in the second. The No. 2 seed struck 5 aces and served at 70%. He was able to secure the only break of serve for the set to level the match at a set each.
With the momentum firmly on his end of the court, Verdasco promptly started serving poorly again. Bellucci went up an early break which he held onto until he served for the match at 5-3. Verdasco wasn’t ready to give up; the Spaniard earned himself a trio of break point chances, but saw them just as quickly erased with forehand errors.
