The 32-time champion US is hurting with the Davis Cup first round starting next weekend.
New captain Jim Courier may be facing late substitutions with Andy Roddick making his return after a year away but currently ill with influenza. In addition, Sam Querrey has a sore shoulder and Mardy Fish is unavailable due to a lining thyroid problem.
The US will take a road trip onto the danger zone of clay in a match-up with equally hampered Chile in Santiago from March 4-6 in the first round. “These guys are tough, and we’re not excuse makers,” said Courier. “We’ll be ready to play and ready to battle when we get down there.”
But illness is not the only worry for the visitors, who also have to deal with a recent rankings swoon from second singles player John Isner, now down to 32nd after failing to win a match in a month. Sam Querrey, 22nd but standing 3-4 in 2011, is not listed to play but will make the trip to South America.
Chile will field Paul Capdeville, Jorge Aguilar, Nicolas Massu and Guillermo Rivera, all ranked in the Top 100. No. 1 Chilean Fernando Gonzalez has not played since the US Open.
