Juan Monaco and No. 4 seed Stanislas Wawrinka moved into the second round in Acapulco, but not without some hard work.
Juan Monaco def. Horacio Zeballos
Argentina’s Juan Monaco had a tricky start to his Acapulco tournament. The No. 7 seed took on countryman Horacio Zeballos, who stayed close to Monaco today in large part because he was so tough on break point chances.
Monaco earned an impressive 15 break point chances, but Zeballos staved off all but 4 of them. Zeballos, by contrast, had just 6 break point chances, but he converted on 3 of them.
The first set was decided in Zeballos’s last service game before the tiebreak. Monaco secured the break of serve that gave him the lead. Both men were shaky on serve in the second set. It featured a pair of service breaks each, with Monaco just pulling out the tiebreaker to win in straights.
Stanislas Wawrinka def. Pablo Andujar
Stanislas Wawrinka was not at his best in this first round encounter. The Swiss man had all sorts of difficulties with Pablo Andujar of Spain in the first two sets. Andujar is ranked for below Wawrinka’s No. 15 at 67, but for at least half of this match, he was the better player.
Much can be attributed to Wawrinka’s poor serving. The Swiss put in just 59% of his first serves in play and allowed Andujar 13 chances to break serve.
Only after losing the middle set did Wawrinka become dominant. Andujar still had 5 chances to break serve, but he was unsuccessful and eventually the Spaniard relinquished the set at love.
