Former champion Mardy Fish is through to the second round in Delray Beach, following the retirement of opponent Bjorn Phau. The American is joined by Juan Martin Del Potro, who took out Richard Berankis late Tuesday.

Wildcard Juan Martin Del Potro made a successful Delray Beach debut on Tuesday, having ousted Richard Berankis in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1. The Argentine saved seven of 8 break points through one hour and 17 minutes of play.
After taking a 3-1 lead in the first set, Del Potro gave up the break on a double fault. The 22-year-old regrouped quickly with a service break in the 10th game. Del Potro fought off five break points in the first game of the second set, then built a double-break edge to 5-1.
He is scheduled to take on Teymuraz Gabashvili for a place in the quarterfinal. The Russian upset fourth seed John Isner in the opening round, 6-4, 5-7, 7-6(13).

Second seed Mardy Fish passed into the round of 16, as opponent Bjorn Phau retired late in the opening set. After surrendering five straight games in less than 15 minutes, the German veteran called it a day with flu-like symptoms.
Fish will meet Ricardo Mello in the next round. The Brazilian rallied to a three-set victory over Rainer Schuettler in the first round, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3.
