Roger Federer opens in Dubai with a straight-set win over Somdev Devvarman on Tuesday. Gilles Simon also advances, scoring his first victory over Mikhail Youzhny in eight tries.
(1) Roger Federer d. (WC) Somdev Devvarman 6-3, 6-3
Federer prevailed in his first match since the Australian Open by dismissing Devvarman after one hour and 15 minutes of play on Tuesday in the opening round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships. The world No. 2 turned in a decent performance and double-faulted four times along with striking four aces en route to a second-round encounter with Marcel Granollers.
The first break of the evening came thanks to a Devvarman double-fault at 2-3. Federer had no trouble serving out the opening of frame of there, ending it with two big serves at 5-3. The underdog Indian had a chance to take a second-set lead with two break chances at 2-1, but Federer thwarted both opportunities. Federer promptly broke for a 3-2 advantage and struck again at 5-3--this time for the match--when his opponent netted a forehand. Devvarman wrapped up his effort with two aces and three double-faults, and he was doomed by 55 percent serving.
Gilles Simon d. (4) Mikhail Youzhny 6-3, 7-5
Simon finally got over the hump against Youzhny. One week after losing to Youzhny in Marseille and dropping to 0-7 lifetime in the head-to-head series, the Frenchman prevailed after one hour and 31 minutes of play on Tuesday. Simon got off to a hot start, breaking early in the first set and consolidating it the rest of the way without facing a break point. With momentum in hand, Simon also raced to a break lead in the second.
Youzhny, though, was not about to go down without a fight. The 11th-ranked Russian got back on level terms for 3-3 and it stayed on serve until 5-5. Youzhny delivered spectacular tennis to fight off a break point and survive a deuce game at 4-4, but he could not do the same at 5-5. Simon broke for 6-5 and served out the proceedings with little trouble--converting his first chance with a crushing overhead. The world No. 33 fired eight aces and four double-faults while setting up a second-round clash with qualifier Lukas Rosol.
