Spaniards David Ferrer and Fernando Verdasco snagged the top two spots in Acapulco as the South American clay court swing comes to an end.
Amid ATP concerns for the rising violence in northern Mexico, a field of 32 players decided to brave the conditions in the city of Acapulco for the chance at 500 ranking points.
Tournament seeds also include the red-hot Nicolas Almagro, fresh off a pair of titles in Costa Do Sauipe and Buenos Aires at No. 3, Switzerland’s Stanislas Wawrinka at No. 4 and Albert Montanes and Alexandr Dolgopolov rounding out the top 6.
To make matters more interesting, the tour’s hottest young star, Milos Raonic, is making an appearance after just losing in the finals of Memphis to Andy Roddick.
There are always a few surprises in the early goings of clay-court tournaments. Verdasco, for instance, will be at risk in his opening round match against Thomaz Bellucci and there is a chance that Victor Hanescu will have opportunities against Nicolas Almagro, who has played a lot of tennis in the past few weeks.
Raonic and Dolgopolov will add some spice to the proceedings in Acapulco, but the favorite is undoubtedly the top seed David Ferrer. The Spaniard is a fierce competitor and should be well-rested after his first round loss in Rotterdam a couple of weeks ago.
