Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic will be in action this week for the first time since the Australian Open. They are taking part in the Dubai Duty Free Championships.
Two of the top three players in the world take the court this week, as Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic are returning from three weeks off to contest the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
However, it would be easy to overlook Federer and Djokovic in the draw amidst the flood of "WC"s and "Q"s in the top half of the bracket. In fact, every single wild card and qualifier is the top half of the draw. All three wild cards are in the top quarter and all four qualifiers are--amazingly--in the second section.
That's mostly good news for Federer, who has a favorable draw and a seemingly clear path to at least the semifinals. His nearest seeded is an out-of-form Ernests Gulbis. The top-seeded Swiss, though, could have a tough second-round match against Dmitry Tursunov.
None of the qualifiers looks to imposing aside from Grigor Dimitrov, who opens against Richard Gasquet. The winner of an opening-round clash between Gilles Simon and No. 4 seed Mikhail Youzhny (a rematch of a three-setter last week in Marseille) will have a great shot of reaching the semis.
Djokovic should have a more difficult time in the bottom half of the draw. The third-ranked Serb opens with stellar hard-court player Michael Llodra before a possible quarterfinal meeting with Marcos Baghdatis. Potential semifinal opponents for Djokovic out of the third quarter of the bracket include Nikolay Davydenko and No. 3 seed Tomas Berdych.
