  • Berdych routines Chardy, Mayer beats Nieminen

Berdych routines Chardy, Mayer beats Nieminen Tomas Berdych eases past Jeremy Chardy on Monday in Dubai. Berdych is joined in the second round by Florian Mayer, a straight-set winner over Jarkko Nieminen.

    (3) Tomas Berdych d. Jeremy Chardy 6-2, 6-3

Berdych extended Chardy's woes with a straight-set victory in the first round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships on Monday evening. Chardy, who succumbed after just one hour and six minutes of play, is now 0-4 this season and has not won a single set. Berdych, meanwhile, improved to 11-3 for his 2011 campaign and set up a second-round clash against either Nikolay Davydenko or Guillermo Garcia-Lopez.

The seventh-ranked Czech got off to a fast start by losing only four points in his first four service games. Despite dropping a mere five points in set two, he still was broken once. Nonetheless, Berdych more than made up for it with three more breaks of his own--the last of which clinched victory at 5-3. Chardy finished with five aces and two double-faults while saving only three of eight break points. The 51st-ranked Frenchman won fewer than half of both his first and second-serve points.

    Florian Mayer d. Jarkko Nieminen 6-4, 6-2

Mayer beat Nieminen in a third-set tiebreaker last fall in Stockholm, but it was far more routine this time around. The German advanced to the Dubai second round after just one hour and five minutes of play.

Although Mayer ha the upper hand in all facets of the game, the serving statistics told the story. The victorious world No. 38 fired six aces and no double-faults while Nieminen struck no aces and double-faulted three times. Mayer donated his own serve twice, but it mattered little since he capitalized on five of 10 break chances. Next up for Mayer is either Marcos Baghdatis or Andrey Golubev.
