Nicolas Almagro will be looking for his second title in as many weeks on Sunday. He defeated No. 6 seed Tommy Robredo in Saturday’s semifinal.
Spain’s Nicolas Almagro has already won the event in Costa Do Sauipe last week; with his straight set victory over countryman Tommy Robredo, he is poised to do so again.
The match was the second of the day for both players. Rain washed out play on Friday, prompting officials to schedule both the quarterfinal and semifinal matches on Saturday.
Robredo made an attempt to keep the opening set on equal footing with Almagro, but he was completely neutralized on the return. He had no break points on Almagro’s serve and finally surrendered a service break when he was serving to force a tiebreaker.
Almagro was far more dominant in the second set. The top seed secured a pair of early service breaks to secure the win with a comprehensive 6-2 scoreline.
The bigger surprise of the day was Juan Ignacio Chela’s upset of No. 2 seed Stanislas Wawrinka. Chela went into the match with an advantage. The Argentine’s quarterfinal match was well into the third set when it was delayed by rain on Friday. Instead of playing an entire match, Chela played only half of a set to defeat Albert Montanes.
The difference in on-court freshness was evident immediately. Wawrinka made no impact at all on Chela’s serve and he was not successful saving a single break point against him; Chela went 4-4 on service break opportunities.
Chela and Almagro will battle for the Buenos Aires title on Sunday.
