Youzhny ousts Tsonga to reach Marseille semis Mikhail Youzhny defeats Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the Marseille quarterfinals on Friday. Dmitry Turusnov also advances with a win over Jurgen Melzer.

    (3) Mikhail Youzhny d. (6) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga 6-4, 2-6, 6-4

Youzhny silenced the French crowd and advanced to the semifinals of the Open 13 by beating Tsonga in one hour and 58 minutes on Friday. A back-and-forth affair saw Youzhny get the upper hand first, as the Russian appeared to be in control throughout the opening frame of play. He did not face a single break point and earned six chances of his own. Youzhny converted only one, but that was enough for him to serve out the set at 5-4.

Tsonga turned the tide decidedly in the second. The sixth-seeded Frenchman won 14 of 16 first-serve points and seized two breaks, the second of which came at 5-2 to force a third. To the chagrin of the Marseille faithful, however, a final turning point came at 3-3. Tsonga fought off one break point, but he double-faulted at deuce and Youzhny forced him into an error with a solid return to get the break. The world No. 11 took care of his next two service games to advance, setting up an encounter with Marin Cilic.

    Dmitry Tursunov d. (4) Jurgen Melzer 6-4, 2-6, 6-1

Tursunov upset Melzer in one hour and 41 minutes during quarterfinal action on Friday. The 129th-ranked Russian fired only three aces to Melzer's 10, but he converted four of seven break-point opportunities to book his semifinal spot alongside No. 1 seed Robin Soderling.

Set one ended with a Tursunov break at 5-4, but Melzer recovered quickly to dominate the second. A series of wild momentum shifts, though, concluded in Tursunov's favor. He served at an incredible 80 percent in the third and dropped a mere four points in four service games. Tursunov broke twice and that allowed him to serve out the proceedings under little pressure at 5-1.
