After a rain-soaked Friday, the Buenos Aires quarterfinals finally got under way on Saturday morning, with semifinals scheduled that same afternoon.
Tommy Robredo def. David Nalbandian
Tommy Robredo made an impression early, as the Spaniard took a 6-4 lead in the first set. Nalbandian found his stride in the second set, however. The Argentine jumped out to a 2-0 lead with an immediate break of Robredo’s serve. With Nalbandian serving to consolidate the break, Robredo had 2 chances to break with 15-40, but Nalbandian fought him off to go up 3-0. The Argentine got in second 15-40 hole at 3-1; Robredo was able to convert and the set was back on serve. Nalbandian had a few chances on Robredo’s serve at 3-4, but the Spaniard held to level the set again.
The outcome of the match seemed to bedetermined in the Argentine’s next service game. Nalbandian quickly got in a 0-40 hole, with Robredo breaking easily to earn the chance to serve out the match. The Argentine fans had a glimmer of hope at 0-30 on Robredo’s serve, but the Spaniard won the next 4 points, and with them the match.
In just a few hours of time, Robredo will take on Nicolas Almagro, who won his quarterfinal match against Jose Acasuso just minutes after Robredo.
Stanislas Wawrinka def. Juan Monaco
Popular Argentine Juan Monaco had a break lead on No. 2 seed Stanislas Wawrinka, but the Swiss man fought back to level the set at 5-5. Wawrinka held to do his part in forcing the opening set breaker, but Monaco faltered, giving the Swiss a weak second serve on set point and paying the price.
Wawrinka drew first blood in the second set. The Swiss man snagged a service break at 3-2 to go up a set and a break. Wawrinka’s next service was not easy. Monaco had a trio of chances to earn the break back, but the Swiss fought him off. A double fault erased Wawrinka’s first game point, Monaco staved off another 2 to take the game back to deuce. The Argentine was denied 3 more break point chances, before Wawrinka finally held.
One hour and 55 minutes into the match, Wawrinka earned his first match point, only to have Monaco hold. The Swiss converted on his second on his own serve to set up a semifinal encounter against Juan Ignacio Chela.
