  • Wawrinka, Monaco triumph in Buenos Aires

    2/17/11 5:00 AM | Cheryl Murray
Wawrinka, Monaco triumph in Buenos Aires Stanislas Wawrinka got through a tough test in his second round match against Victor Hanescu. Juan Monaco joins Wawrinka in the quarters.

Swiss No.2 Stanislas Wawrinka needed 2 hours and 47 minutes to get past Victor Hanescu of Romania. Both men seemed to work into the match. The first set featured a service break for each man to force the tiebreaker. Hanescu, who served better through the set, took control early in the tiebreaker; he held Wawrkina to 2 points.

Wawrinka was completely dominant in the second set. The Swiss man secured a pair of service breaks early to level the match at a set a piece.

The third set was the most dramatic and entertaining of the match. Both men had chances to take the lead. Hanescu missed a backhand that would have set up match point at 4-5. Wawrinka then took his turn at missing an opportunity with one break point at 5-5, which Hanescu fought off. In the end, Wawrinka was able to snag the third set breaker.

Juan Monaco’s win over Eduardo Schwank was more straight-forward, though not as easy as the score suggests. The first set was a battle of service breaks, with a whopping six altogether (3 for each player). Monaco just managed to secure the tiebreaker.

After he secured the first set, Monaco had a much easier time in the second. He secured a pair of service breaks while not facing a break point on his own serve.

Wawrinka and Monaco will face off in the quarterfinals.
