San Jose champion Milos Raonic suffered no letdown in Memphis, as he upset second seed Fernando Verdasco in three sets on Wednesday. The 20-year-old recorded his second win against the 27-year-old in less than a week, following his title-winning success at the SAP Open.
After splitting the first two sets, a close deciding set went to a tie-break. Raonic led 3-0 before dropping three of the next four points. Match point came at 6-5 for the Canadian, who sealed the victory in two hours and two minutes. The 20-year-old completed the evening with 16 aces and 83% of his first-service points captured.

Verdasco said after his loss at AO that he has a broken bone in his ankle. So maybe he isn't 100% fit.

Delpo is definitely better than Raonic. It would be interesting to see the two battling it out. I'll back Delpo to win. Verdasco at his best will sure beat this Raonic too. Raonic is far too inexperienced and he still needs lots of exposure in big matches. We have to wait for this whole year to unfold and see where Raonic stands by end of the year, is he comparable to Delpo, Cilic when they were at the similar age. Too soon to pass any judgement.

Yes, I read somewhere that he may not be in the Spanish DC team because of his ankle injury, I couldn't find where I read it, that's why I refrained from saying anything about it being the reason for his performance lately.

great fun about raonic! a newcomer is always welcome! seems it takes many years for players to reach the top of the top these days. only extreme talents break through early. the game is much more mental now.

Well folks. I guess it wasn't just luck that Raonic beat Verdasco. It's gotta hurt Verd's ego to lose twice in one week to a 20-yr old, lower-ranked player. Good experience for the kid, and I hope he reaches at least the semis as the bottom half draw looks very promising now. Although Raonic has a great serve, he needs to work on his service return and base line game (he's no Delpo right now).
