Richard Gasquet has gone coach-hunting again, with the dissatisfied Frenchman taking on veteran Italian mentor Riccardo Piatti as part of his team.
Gasquet, once tipped as a Top ten threat and for at least a decade billed as the future of French tennis, has been bypassed in the rankings by compatriots including Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Gael Monfils, Gilles Simon and Michael Llodra.
Piatti is one of the most successful, if low-key, coaches in the sport, also working with longtime client Ivan Ljubicic since 1997. But with his ranking suffering at 31st and only modest results so far this season, Gasquet is desperate to assert himself back into the game.
His only performances of note in 2011 were a pair of match wins in Sydney and the same at the Australian Open. But it's not so simple as just changing coaches, with Gasquet also being advised not only by his father but also by former French player Sebastien Grosjean,
Piatti will come in as a replacement for Eric Deblicker, a one-time Gasquet coach who has been promoted into executive suite at the Lagardere management group.
"Everybody knows Richard’s an excellent player," Piatti told French media. "He’s still young and had to live with huge expectations because of his early success. He has to be given time to grow and better manage his emotions."
Gasquet has been resting shoulder problems and has not played since losing in the Zagreb second round early in the month.
