  • Cilic, Tursunov advance to Marseille quarters

    2/17/11 5:58 PM | Ricky Dimon
Cilic, Tursunov advance to Marseille quarters Marin Cilic defeats Philipp Petzschner in straight sets at the Open 13 on Thursday. Cilic is joined in the quarterfinals by Dmitry Tursunov, an upset winner over Ivan Ljubicic.

    Marin Cilic d. Philipp Petzschner 7-6(3), 6-3

Cilic served at a horrific 45 percent but still dropped serve only once and defeated Petzschner in one hour and 42 minutes on Thursday at the Open 13. Both players broke once en route to a first-set tiebreaker, which is when Cilic took complete control. The 6'6'' Croat won it seven points to three and never looked back.

Petzschner surrendered an early break in the second, but he continued to compete--especially in his 2-4 return game. The 60th-ranked German earned one break chance and extended his opponent to multiple deuces, yet could not convert. Cilic held for 5-2 then finished off the proceedings without any trouble at 5-3. Next up for the world No. 28 is second-seeded Tomas Berdych, a straight-set winner over Edouard Roger-Vasselin.

    Dmitry Tursunov d. (5) Ivan Ljubicic 7-6(4), 6-3

Tursunov won by an almost identical scoreline to the Cilic-Petzschner match, upsetting Ljubicic after one hour and 19 minutes of play on Thursday. The unseeded Russian did not face a single break point the entire way, but Ljubicic held with similar ease throughout the first set to force a tiebreaker. Tursunov promptly seized the match in his grasp by taking the decider seven points to four.

Return points were also hard to come by in set two. Ljubicic lost even fewer on his own serve than Tursunov, but one dismal service game proved to be the 14th-ranked Croat's downfall. Tursunov won all of his return points in a flurry and consolidated the lone break of the afternoon with a final service hold at 5-3. The world No. 129, who will face No. 4 seed Jurgen Melzer for a spot in the semifinals, wrapped up his effort with six aces and one double-fault. Ljubicic finished with 15 aces while double-faulting twice.
