Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and Michael Llodra win all-French showdowns on Tuesday in Marseille. Tsonga hammers Benoit Paire and Llodra dismisses familiar foe Julien Benneteau.
(6) Jo-Wilfried Tsonga d. (WC) Benoit Paire 6-1, 6-2
Playing just two days after finishing runner-up to Robin Soderling in Rotterdam, Tsonga destroyed Paire in a mere 55 minutes on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Open 13. This one was never competitive, as the 16th-ranked Frenchman earned two immediate breaks and raced to a 5-0 lead in the first set. Paire finally got on the scoreboard with a rare hold, but his opponent promptly served it out at 5-1.
Tsonga ran into to slight difficulty in the second--mainly due to a failure to win second-serve points--but he still did not drop serve. Marseille's No. 6 seed saved all four of the break points he faced during the match and finished off the proceedings with a hold at 5-2. Paire wrapped up his effort with zero aces to Tsonga's 10 and the 120th-ranked Frenchman fought off only one of five break points. Next up for Tsonga is Sergiy Stakhovsky, who dismissed Illya Marchenko on Monday.
(8) Michael Llodra d. Julien Benneteau 6-4, 4-6, 6-3
In a first-round rematch of last year's final, Llodra again got the best of Benneteau with a three-set win that took one hour and 39 minutes. Neither Frenchman had much difficulty on serve throughout the first set and no break points were seen en route to a 5-4 Llodra lead. Under the pressure of serving to stay in the set, however, Benneteau cracked and Llodra struck for an early lead.
The world No. 66 fought back and broke midway through the second before serving it out at 5-4. In set three, though, it was Llodra's turn to regain the momentum. Marseille's No. 8 seed, who got a look at one break point in all three sets, converted his chance in the third and that was all he needed. Llodra finished off the proceedings on serve at 5-3 to set up a second-round encounter with Tobias Kamke. Benneteau recorded three aces and no double-faults while Llodra double-faulted a dreadful seven times but somewhat made up for it with 10 aces.
