Two-time Memphis champion Andy Roddick overcame a difficult opening round, having downed Richard Berankis Tuesday evening. The top seed rallied to a three-set victory to advance to the round of 16.
World No. 8 Andy Roddick is through to the second round at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, following his 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 win over Richard Berankis. The 28-year-old American tallied 23 aces through 92 minutes of play.
After dropping the opening set, Roddick earned a key break of serve at 3-2 in the second. The top seed continued his effort to take a 4-2 edge in set three. Roddick, who moves to 8-2 for the 2011 season, completed the evening with 38 of 44 first-service points captured.
He is scheduled to face Janko Tipsarevic for a spot in the quarterfinal. Tipsarevic earned a straight-set victory against American qualifier Ryan Sweeting, 6-0, 7-6(7).
