  • Cilic survives, Mahut sets up Soderling clash

    2/15/11 7:24 PM | Ricky Dimon
Cilic survives, Mahut sets up Soderling clash Marin Cilic comes back from a set deficit to beat Stephane Bohli on Tuesday in Marseille. Nicolas Mahut also advances, easing past Andrey Kumantsov to set up a meeting with Robin Soderling.

    Marin Cilic d. Stephane Bohli 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-2

Cilic survived an upset scare and defeated Bohli in exactly two hours on Tuesday to reach the second round of the Open 13. The 6'6'' Croat fired 16 aces and never faced a break point, but he was pushed to a tiebreaker in the first set and lost it eight points to six. Cilic quickly recovered, however, and used one break to serve out the second set at 5-3. From there it was all over for Bohli. The Swiss, who did well to qualify for the main draw, dropped serve immediately in the third and never had a sniff of getting back into the match. Cilic, who lost only one point on serve in set three, finished off the proceedings with an easy hold at 5-2.

    (WC) Nicolas Mahut d. (Q) Andrey Kumantsov 6-2, 6-0

Mahut served at just 47 percent, but he still lost only seven points in seven service games and destroyed Kumantsov in 49 minutes on Tuesday. The veteran Frenchman had to fight off three break points in the first set, but it was smooth sailing for him aside from that one game. Kumantsov completely disappeared in the second, winning a total of six points--including a mere two on his own serve. Mahut, who broke a whopping five times over the course of the match, will now meet No. 1 seed Robin Soderling.

    Andreas Seppi d. Robin Haase 5-7, 6-4, 7-6(2)

Seppi withstood 19 Haase aces, clawed his way back from a set down, and saved two match points in the third before stunning Haase in two hours and 29 minutes on Tuesday. The Italian fought off a break point at 3-4 in the final frame of play then survived a 15-40 deficit at 4-5. Having squandered all of his opportunities, Haase could not recover when he was pushed to a decisive tiebreaker. Seppi raced through it seven points to two to book a second-round clash against fourth-seeded Jurgen Melzer.
