  • Roddick, Verdasco lead Memphis field

    2/14/11 4:16 AM | Kelli DeMario
Roddick, Verdasco lead Memphis field Andy Roddick returns to action this week as the ATP World Tour heads to Memphis, Tennessee for the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships. The American is set to enter the 32-player draw as the top seed.

Two-time Memphis champion Andy Roddick heads back to competition after reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open (lost to Wawrinka). The 28-year-old American has compiled a 30-7 record at the Regions Morgan Keegan Championships, bolstered by title-winning runs in 2002 (def. Blake) and 2009 (def. Stepanek).

Roddick is 7-2 for the 2011 season, aided by a runner-up finish to Robin Soderling in Brisbane. The top-ranked American is set to take part in his 11th consecutive Memphis tournament.

The two-time champion is located in a competitive half of the draw that includes: (6) John Isner, (7) Yen-Hsun Lu and (9) Xavier Malisse. Additional players in Roddick’s section are: Richard Berankis, Ivan Dodig, Lleyton Hewitt, Ivo Karlovic, Janko Tipsarevic and Juan Martin Del Potro.

Roddick will open his bid for a third title against Berankis, who made the quarterfinal last week in San Jose. Passage through the first round will set a meeting with either Janko Tipsarevic or qualifier Ryan Sweeting. The nearest seeded player is Lu, whom Roddick would take on for a spot in the semifinal. Fellow American Isner, set to face off against Del Potro in round one, looms as a possible semifinal opponent.

Headlining the bottom half of the draw is second seed Fernando Verdasco. The Spaniard, competing in his second Memphis tournament, has been placed alongside (4) Mardy Fish, (5) Sam Querrey (defending champion) and Kevin Anderson. Other combatants in Verdasco’s section include: James Blake, Denis Istomin, Milos Raonic and Radek Stepanek.

The 27-year-old is slated to battle wildcard Raonic in the first round. The two fought for the championship title in San Jose, where the Canadian came away with a victory in straight sets.

Third seed Gael Monfils has withdrawn from the event, citing a left wrist injury.
