  • Raonic upsets Verdasco for first tour title in San Jose

    2/14/11 4:06 AM | Cheryl Murray
Raonic upsets Verdasco for first tour title in San Jose Milos Raonic shocked Fernando Verdasco in straight sets to capture his first ever ATP tour title; Verdasco never dropped serve in the match.

For most of the first set, Fernando Verdasco breezed through his service games. Raonic got a bit impatient on the return could not find purchase on the Spaniard’s serve. The Canadian’s own big serving kept him in the match, but Verdasco went into tiebreaker with the momentum firmly on his end of the court.

Verdasco came out on fire in the tiebreaker. The Canadian showed some signs of nerves with a couple of unforced errors to give Verdasco the 6-2 lead. With 4 set points at his disposal, Verdasco proceeded to give up his first point on his own serve, Raonic held the next two points and unexpectedly won the next point on Verdasco’s serve to stave off all 4 set points. The next two points also went Raonic’s way and from out of nowhere, the Canadian youngster took the opening set.

The second set ventured the same way as the first, with both men holding for 12 straight games to force the tiebreaker. This time it was Raonic who struck first, pummeling Verdasco with his massive forehand to draw the error.

Up a mini-break, Raonic kept his nerve as he served to consolidate. A big serve lengthened the lead to 6-3, for a trio of match points. Verdasco served an ace to save the first, and a Raonic error erased the second. On his third match point, the Canadian came up with another massive first serve which Verdasco hit into the net.

The match ended on a bit of a strange note, as someone in the stands called out right after Raonic’s last serve, but there was nothing chair umpire Steve Ullrich could do. Raonic became to first Canadian since Greg Rusedski to win an ATP tour title.

I believe Nishikori also won his first title at Delray Beach at the age of 18, but then until now we are still waiting for his second title to come. I understand he suffered some injury problems, his elbow I think. So let's not go ahead of ourselves. Congrats to Raonic for his first title tough. Well done! Still plenty of rooms for improvements. Let's see if he can match Delpo or Cilic when they are at the same age as Raonic.

In fact Rafa, Nole, Murray, Berdych, Delpo and even Cilic, were all ahead of this current batch of youngsters headed by Dolgo. Let's see whether this latest batch can outdo Rafa's batch of players, though I know it would be difficult for anyone to overtake Rafa in terms of achievements.

Guess who Verdasco will be playing in the 1st round at Memphis? These two are going together to the Octagon again so it will be a big test for Milos to give poster boy V another cavity search, but this time, he won't be able to sit for a while.

Interesting first round match. I think Verdasco will lose again, such a head case, choking away four set points in the tie break! Sometimes I wonder who is the more experienced player out there!

Kei never could serve at 150 mph!

There are others serving like that too, still not many can win slams. Raonic may or may not be a star, it depends on how he improves his game, esp his backhand. Furthermore, nobody knows whether Raonic is injury prone or not, as he has just started the weekly grind of the atp tour. See what happened to Delpo? Big serve and big forehand and he gets wrist problem.

I wish Raonic well, he seems a pleasant boy, and Rafa speaks highly of him too, after playing against him in Tokyo. It will be interesting to see among this batch of youngsters, who will rise to the top. I see Raonic, Dolgo and Tomic having good potential. I don't know about Dimitrov, he has a SHBH and people start to compare him with earlier days Fed. A long way to go for Dimitrov, Fed and Rafa are two special players, may be once in a life time kind of players. I doubt Dimitrov can live up to expectations. People are starting to compare these youngsters to those established players or even legends. Dimitrov = Fed; Raonic = Sampras; Tomic = Murray; who is Dolgo comparable with? I see Berankis plays like Nole, the way he strikes the ball. And where is the next Rafa??

kei made his injury comeback last year (was out for a while with elbow injury) and is meant to be coached by brad gilbert this year. i hope he can get his form back and improve. i've watched him live a number of times, he's got some very nice shot making and i like his game. he was actually sick this year at AO (so was simon) and was not fully fit during his 3rd match with nando so things not going his way but i would really like to see him make headway in the ranking this year because i do think he is quite talented. seems like a really nice person too which always helps.
