The breakthrough ATP title for 20-year-old Milos Raonic has turned Canadian tennis on its head.
The Montenegran-born player won the San Jose event for his first career trophy thanks to a victory over Fernando Verdasco, with both men losing serve exactly once during the week.
"I came here and had probably my best week. I can’t stop smiling. I’m happy about it and I hope I can keep it going more than six weeks into the full year schedule and see where I am at the end of the year,” said Raonic, the son of a strictly academic family of engineers and professors.
Raonic became the first Canadian to win an ATP trophy since Greg Rusedski - who became a Brit - in 1995. The modest Canadian with the huge serve will try to continue his hot streak as he plays in Memphis - and faces Verdasco again, this time in the first round.
The 59th-ranked youngster remains surprised by his success which began with an Australian Open fourth round. "It’s something that came quicker than expected, but something amazing... I’ll go play Memphis and after this I’ll find some time and soak in everything that’s happened. Right now the focus is to get ready for next week.”
“If I can keep playing like this, then it could start a (Canadian) movement to have more televised matches tennis-wise and help the sport grow."
