Robin Soderling and Jo-Wilfried Tsonga won their semifinal matches on Saturday to set up a meeting in the finals on Sunday.
Robin Soderling def. Viktor Troicki
Serbia’s Viktor Troicki actually put up a good fight in this match, despite his straight-set defeat. As he had in his quarterfinal match, Troicki faced a host of breakpoints, except that against Soderling he was unable to serve himself out of trouble often enough.
The real story of the match, though, was Soderling’s continued ability to secure late-in-the-set service breaks. He and Troicki traded breaks of serve in the first set, but Soderling poured on pressure with the Serb serving to force a tiebreaker and took the set at 7-5.
Soderling blasted winners from the baseline and even made a few much-improved forays into net, with the result that while Troicki held his own, the Swede was never in real danger of losing the match.
The second set played similarly to the first. Troicki managed to stave off Soderling, but at the tail-end of the set, Soderling once again snagged the service break at the critical point in the set.
Soderling will take on Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in the final.
