  • Soderling, Tsonga move on to Marseille

    2/13/11 10:42 PM | Ricky Dimon
Soderling, Tsonga move on to Marseille Rotterdam finalists Robin Soderling and Nicolas Almagro are back in action this week at the Open 13. They are joined in a strong field by Tomas Berdych, Mikhail Youzhny, and 2009 champion Michael Llodra.

The European indoor hard-court swing continues this week in Marseille, where an outstanding field has gathered despite only 250 ranking points being at stake.

Just how strong is it? Eight of the Top 22 players in the world (as of Sunday) are in action, which means world No. 28 Marin Cilic is not even seeded. Rotterdam winner Robin Soderling leads the way as the No. 1 seed and he has a first-round bye along with Tomas Berdych, Mikhail Youzhny, and Jurgen Melzer.

Defending champion Michael Llodra is also in the field and in the same first quarter of the draw as Soderling. Interestingly, Llodra has a rematch of last year's Open 13 final in the very first round--against fellow Frenchman Julien Benneteau. Nicolas Mahut is also in the top section with a wild card and he could face Soderling in round two.

Tsonga, who fell to Benneteau in the semifinals last season, has a favorable draw and should cruise into the quarters as long as he is not fatigued after a long week in Rotterdam. Potential quarterfinal opponents for the sixth-seeded Frenchman include Youzhny, Nikolay Davydenko, and Gilles Simon.

Berdych's first real test in the bottom bracket will likely come against Cilic or Ernests Gulbis in the quarterfinals. Melzer is in a wide-open section section that also features Ivan Ljubicic, Robin Haase, Dmitry Tursunov, and Andrey Golubev.
