San Jose - Verdasco, Del Potro reach semifinal Defending champion Fernando Verdasco reached the final four at the SAP Open, following his straight-set victory over Denis Istomin on Friday. Juan Martin Del Potro also advanced, having taken down Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets.

    (1) Fernando Verdasco def. (5) Denis Istomin 6-4, 6-4

Top seed Fernando Verdasco made the semifinal, after upending fifth seed Denis Istomin in straight sets. The Spaniard collected 7 aces and two service breaks en route to a 6-4, 6-4 victory in one hour and 25 minutes.

“I knew that it was going to be a tough match; (Istomin) made the semi-finals here last year,” Verdasco said. “I think that these conditions are good for his game. I tried to play the game that maybe he doesn’t like that much, with more spin and trying to push him back in the court. I think that went well.”

Verdasco will take on Juan Martin Del Potro for a place in the final.

Juan Martin Del Potro def. (7) Lleyton Hewitt 6-2, 6-3

Former World No. 4 Juan Martin Del Potro made his first semifinal since 2009, after defeating Lleyton Hewitt in straight sets. The 22-year-old, who passed through the match unbroken, converted four of 11 break chances through an hour and 16 minutes of play.

“I need matches to play better. To play four or five matches this week would be fantastic for the comeback. I hope to be in good shape for tomorrow. I am feeling good this week but I am still far off my best level. I can play better and I am getting better slowly. I am working day by day for the future and I hope to be in good shape for a real comeback,” Del Potro said, post-match.

“Against Hewitt you have to play good tennis and serve well. I played a good match today and played well in important moments. I was very focused on serve.”

Anybody know why Milos played an exho today? Monfils retired and they made the kid play Ivo in an exho. Now would they do that to a top 10 player? I didn't see Jo in any exho when Berdych retired.

Look what they're asking : play to win in QF then lose concentration by playing a meaningless exho then go back to real play for final. Unfair treatment of the kid imho.

I think it would have been the opposite, numero, if he hadn't played. FeVer and Polito played a tough semifinal. If Milos hadn't done his exho (how strenuous it was is another question; I didn't see it) there would have been one player coming to the final after a tough semi and one coming in absolutely fresh.

I honestly think that would have been the more unfair situation.
