Robin Soderling defeated Mikhail Youzhny in a replay of the 2010 Rotterdam final. The Swede will take on Viktor Troicki who defeated Marin Cilic.
Robin Soderling def. Mikhail Youzhny 6-4, 7-6(5)
This match was actually even closer than the score line suggests. The first set was evenly matched all the way until Youzhny was serving at 4-5 to stay in the set. Both men blasted away from the baseline, but it was Soderling who broke through in the tenth game to take the first set.
Youzhny found himself in trouble on serve, getting in a 0-40 hole at one point, but the Russian was able to serve himself out of trouble to the delight of the crowd. Both men held in each of their service games and it was only clutch play from Soderling’s end of the court that won it for the Swede. He will take on Viktor Troicki in the semifinals.
Viktor Troicki def. Marin Cilic 7-5, 6-3
The story of this match was Troicki’s ability to serve his way out of trouble. In the first set alone, Troicki staved off a staggering 8 of 9 break points, almost each of which were big first serves. Cilic did manage to secure a service break, but he surrendered a pair of them, the second when the Croat was serving to send the first set to a tiebreaker.
Once Troicki had won the first set, Cilic ran out of steam. His first serve percentage dropped to a dismal 38%, which allowed Troicki to get the only service break of the set and with it the straight set victory.
