Alexandr Dolgopolov advances to the Costa do Sauipe semifinals with a straight-set win over Potito Starace on Thursday. Next up for Dolgopolov is Ricardo Mello, who rolled past Pablo Andujar.
(4) Alexandr Dolgopolov d. (7) Potito Starace 6-3, 6-4
Dolgopolov maintained his winning ways by dismissing Starace in straight sets on Thursday to reach the semifinals of the Brasil Open. The 22-year-old Ukrainian, who made it to the Australian Open quarterfinals two weeks ago, needed only one hour and 14 minutes to pocket another victory.
After breaking early in the first set for a quick lead, Dolgopolov saved all three of the break points he faced and he finished off the opening frame of play at 5-3 with his sixth ace of the afternoon. The No. 4 seed donated his own serve once in the second, but he made up for it with two breaks of his own and served out the proceedings at 5-4.
Ricardo Mello d. Pablo Andujar 6-1, 6-0
Mello made a surprise run to the Costa do Sauipe semifinals in 2010, and he has done exactly the same one year later. The 30-year-old Brazilian benefited from being in a section of the draw vacated by Tommy Robredo, and he destroyed Andujar--who took out Robredo in round two--in just 58 minutes on Thursday.
This one was never competitive, as Andujar won a measly total of 22 points--including just 10 on his own serve. After managing only one game in the first set, the unseeded Spaniard won none in the second. Mello converted a whopping five of five break points throughout the match and served out the proceedings at 5-1 to advance with ease.
