Defending champion Fernando Verdasco made a successful start to his title defense, having downed wildcard Rajeev Ram in straight sets. Gael Monfils also advanced following his routine win over wildcard Bradley Klahn.

World No. 9 Fernando Verdasco needed just 61 minutes to secure an opening-round victory on Wednesday. The defending champion, who tallied 8 aces during the match, held nine straight service games without facing a break point. After missing break chances early, Verdasco secured a service break at 3-2 in the opening set. The Spaniard continued his effort, as he built a double break edge to 4-1. Verdasco completed the match with a mere 7 points lost on serve.
He faces Ivo Karlovic for a place in the quarterfinal. Karlovic won his opener against American Ryan Sweeting, 6-4, 6-4.
(2) Gael Monfils def. (WC) Bradley Klahn 6-3, 6-2
Second seed Gael Monfils came through his first-round match in 62 minutes late Wednesday. The Frenchman collected 10 aces and three service breaks en route to a 6-3, 6-2 win. A well-timed forehand gave Monfils a break at 2-1 in the first set. The 24-year-old cruised through the set, striking an ace to close at 5-3. The World No. 12 had no difficulty in set two, as he took a 4-0, double-break advantage in short order.
Monfils is next to meet Robert Kendrick in the round of 16. The American held on to defeat Russian Igor Kunitsyn in the first round, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4.
