    (4) Alexandr Dolgopolov d. Ruben Ramirez Hidalgo 7-5, 6-4

Two weeks after reaching the quarterfinals of the Australian Open, Dolgopolov maintained his momentum with a straight-set victory over Ramirez Hidalgo at the Brasil Open on Wednesday. Having already received a first-round bye as the No. 4 seed, Dolgopolov needed one hour and 36 minutes to set up a quarterfinal clash against Potito Starace.

Ramirez Hidalgo turned in a solid performance and was competitive throughout, especially in the opening set. Both players held en route to 5-5, but a late break gave Dolgopolov the upper hand. The 22-year-old Ukrainian saved both of the break points he faced in the second and he seized one more break of his own to prevail. Dolgopolov finished with 14 aces while Ramirez Hidalgo struck five aces and won 75 percent of his first-serve points.

    Ricardo Mello d. (2) Albert Montanes 6-3, 6-3

There's something about playing in Brazil for Mello, who recently defended his Sao Paulo Challenger title. The 30-year-old Brazilian also made it to the semifinals of this Costa do Sauipe event last year and he is showing signs of the same form in 2011. Mello followed up a straight-set win over Santiago runner-up Santiago Giraldo by seeing off the second-seeded Montanes in just one hour and five minutes on Wednesday.

Mello put on an absolute serving clinic, dropping a mere seven points in nine service games without facing a single break point. He capitalized on his only break point in the first set before serving it out at 5-3. A reeling Montanes struggled even more in the second as the Spaniard donated serve twice more, including to throw away the match at 3-5. Mello recorded two aces and won 24 of 27 first-serve points to set up a quarterfinal date with either Tommy Robredo or Pablo Andujar.
