  • Chela through to quarters, Robredo's streak ends

    2/10/11 5:06 AM | Ricky Dimon
Chela through to quarters, Robredo's streak ends Juan Ignacio Chela advances at the Brasil Open on Wednesday thanks to a three-set win over Lukasz Kubot. Pablo Andujar also moves through to the quarterfinals in three sets, taking out Tommy Robredo.

    (5) Juan Ignacio Chela d. Lukasz Kubot 3-6, 7-5, 6-4

Chela got off to a dismal start but fought back to defeat Kubot in two hours and 44 minutes and book his place in the quarterfinals of the Brasil Open on Wednesday. The 39th-ranked Argentine won fewer than half of his first-serve points and just one of seven second-serve points in the opening set while getting broken three times. Kubot served it out at 5-3 for an early lead.

The 103rd-ranked Pole came close to victory in the second, but he buckled under the pressure of serving to stay in the set at 5-6. Chela broke to force a third set and never looked back with momentum in hand. Costa do Sauipe's No. 5 seed, who won 12 of 16 second-serve return points in set two, continued to feast on his opponent's second offerings. Kubot survived a 14-point game for 1-1, but Chela soon broke and did not face a single break point as he served out the match the rest of the way.

    Pablo Andujar d. (6) Tommy Robredo 6-4, 5-7, 6-2

Robredo was coming off a title at the Movistar Open, but his hot streak came to an end at the hands of an unlikely opponent in the form of Andujar on Wednesday. The underdog Spaniard came out firing and played the critical points in impressive fashion. He saved all five of the break points he faced in set one, so one break was enough for Andujar to finish it off on his racket at 5-4.

The world No. 69 suddenly saved none of the three break points he faced in set two and he visibly choked as he approached the finish line. A dismal service game by Andujar at 5-4 allowed Robredo to stay in the match, and the No. 6 seed added another break at 6-5 to force a third. Nonetheless, Andujar recovered and broke immediately in the final frame of play. Another break took some of the pressure off at 5-2, and this time Andujar made no mistake while serving for the match, holding at love. Next up for Andujar is Ricardo Mello, while Chela will go up against another Brazilian in third-seeded Thomaz Bellucci.
